Here our Titans spread their wings to unlock their passion. They are provided ample opportunities to participate in a plethora of activities. This gives them confidence and builds their personalities. They are made to understand the difference between cut- throat competition and a healthy one. Here they are taught to be in competition with themselves. We encourage the ones who have talent and also the ones who wish to explore their talent.
The Freshers are given an opportunity to showcase their talent. Their talents and energies are then properly channelized in their chosen fields. of the most remarkable dramatic societies of Delhi university bringing accolades to college every year. It has made its mark not only in the colleges of DU but has been the winner at IIT Bombay, Kharagpur etc.
The Society handled theatre also but its hands were so full that they branched off to make a separate Theatre society this year- NAVRANG. From script writing, directing to producing everything is done by the members of the society themselves.
The office bearers soon took the charge of the societies, now infused with new talent. They became busy in hosting and participating in various inter-college and inter-university events. The table at the end of the report will give an idea how active they were throughout the year
The Cultural Society surprised the teachers on Teachers’ Day, 5th Sept when they paid a tribute to them by staging a short play ‘Bade Bhaisaab’ by Munshi Premchand. The tight production and fine acting captivated everyone. The newly formed Navrang Society, spearheaded by its dynamic president, Kamal Kishor, announced to everyone that it demands to be noticed.
And noticed he was! At the Inter-collegiate Drama Competition, organized by Shakespeare Society of India, on 5th February, 2014, Kamal’s play on Julius Caesar, was adjudged the best produced play from among the thirteen entries. And there was special mention of the acting of Gaurav Singh Parmar.
The main event that all students look forward to is the annual inter-university cultural fest. This year, Aaghaz-2014, was held on 31st Jan and 1st Feb. The splendor of the sunny winter afternoons increased multifold by the simple, heart- warming theme of the festival, DIL SE DESI. It brought to the stage the color and life of the Indian streets. From innumerous exciting events to amazing stalls to a gala star night, the fest had all the ingredients to keep the adrenaline going. The fest showed many aspects of the streets, from food to various crafts, games and entertainments and people that make our Indian streets so special.
Prof. Amitabh Srivastava, a renowned academician and a theatre personality of National School of Drama encouraged students to always be eager to learn and Guests of Honour-Ms. Nalini and Ms.Kamilini, the beautiful duo Kathak gurus, talked of woman empowerment. They stressed that all girls should live up to their dreams.
The theme for Aaghaz-2014 being Indian streets- dil se desi, all the competitions came with a twist to check the desi streak in each heart:
Diversity organized "desi-vibes.
Rudra organized Street- play competition –Shor. The plays were not only fun to watch but left a deep impact on the audience because of their socially relevant themes.
Chanakya- Abhivyakti- the Debate competition witnessed more than 70 participants, pouring-in their ideas on the women Reservation Bill, triggering a heated discussion.
Young minds were set free to play with words, weaving magic. The neurons were put to test in another exciting event, Buzzer-the quiz.
Other events checking the spontaneity and reflexes of the mind were the group discussion-opinion forum and extempore -JAM it!! Held in 3 rounds, the second one came with an interesting twist for the participants of GD. Role-playing certain celebrities, they were to explain why 'their' life needs to be preserved if stuck in a crashing airplane with only one parachute!
Young magicians wove their magic in the creative writing competition-Pencraft and poetry competition -Kavyamrit.Touching each facet of life, the poems left the audiences mesmerized. After the beautiful display of poetic talents, it was time to get drenched in the melodious ocean of shlokas in the Shlokochcharan competition. Seeing the enthusiastic participation, it can be believed that our culture will never lose its shine.
While the intellectual minds were busy in the tug-of-war of ideas, the artistic talents blossomed in the events of Raaga. Gata rahe mera dil- the solo singing competition and Mile sur mera tumhara- the classical group singing competition saw a spectacular blend of sur, taal and lay.
Along with classical singing, there was the much-looked for rapping event-D Rap beats. The amazing raps made each head sway and each foot tap to its beats.
The fine arts society-Impressions also came up with a challenge to the artists where they had to create comic effects through the play of paint and paintbrushes. The wonderful paintings that emerged in the canvas painting competition also left the viewers in awe.
We had another exciting competition in the form of The Director's cut organized by Navrang- the theatre society. The directorial aspect of making a movie was competed for and the participants here also gave a tough time to each other putting their cameras to the best use.
The college's technical society-Techwiz. It organised the programming competitions- Codedrift, Quiz- XQuiz IT and Lan Wars.
We also had an awesome head banging session in the Battle of Bands where 8 bands simply exhausted their drums n guitars. This event was organized by Conundrum and it was indeed remarkable.
The grandeur of the fest lied not only in the varied competitions but was taken to another level when the grounds of PGDAV hosted the arrival of our-beloved Tulsi- Smriti Irani, Finalist of Miss Asia pacific, a much-celebrated and extremely talented actress and now a member of Rajya Sabha. Ms. Smriti Irani made each head turn to catch a glimpse of hers. She not only spared her valuable time for attending the event but also encouraged the students enormously to keep taking part in such events and praised the college for providing such a platform to the students. She sat through the Puppet Show—Gender Circus, staged by Katkatha Puppet Arts Group, conceptualized and directed by Ms Anurupa Roy. She appreciated the message of gender disparity conveyed through a crisp, tight plot.
The excitement of the audience took to hullabaloo when a Hindi Rock band, -Aayudh came to perform on the first day of the fest. It was all the more special because an alumnus of the college itself- Jayant Sankla led the band as the vocalist cum lyricist. All hands were up in the air as Aayudh performed the latest and most loved songs.
The second evening of the fest was even hysterical as the dope-shope fame Deep Money stepped onto the stage. The rendition of his famous songs live by himself made the crowds go orgiastic. But before that the audience was lifted to a dream world of foot- tapping, vibrant folk dances of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. It was a great finale to the rich diverse culture of India and befitted well to the theme of the festival. All this was possible by the good offices of Sahitya Kala Parishad. If not for them the very essence of festival would have been lost.
All the Societies worked hard to make this event a resounding success. More than 20 competitions were held successfully inviting the participation of various colleges of DU and other universities. The dil se desi concept of the fest was truly lived for the two days of the fest. The stalls, the chatpati chat, the Columbus ride, the ebullient events and the amazing performances all combined to make the fest a cherish-able experience.
The Year sailed through smoothly. Behind every success there is a solid support and all the credit goes to my able marshals, Ms Shashi Nanda, Ms Deepshikha, Dr Hira Singh Bisht, Mr Dinesh Singh and last but not the least Mr Vishnu Gupta. Both Dinesh and Vishnu handled the Finance with finesse. My heartfelt gratitude to all! I am because you all are.
